Although my work follows a different direction than that of my parents and grandparents, it is rooted in a family tradition that spans three generations of photographers. In Uruguay, my grandfather Enrique Frangella was among the pioneers who introduced color photography to South America, working in close collaboration with Kodak to test films and lighting before their market release. My grandmother, Maruja M. Frangella, specialized in hand-coloring photographs and painted large-scale backdrops, many of which remain preserved from the 1920s.
The family’s photographic legacy began with the Frangella siblings, including Humberto Frangella – a distinguished portrait artist whose experimental approach and independent spirit set him apart from prevailing artistic conventions of his time.
